Introduction to Ryan Cale, CPA (almost)

Hi! My name is Ryan Cale and I am fifth year student finishing up the B/MAcc program here at OU. If you are not a business student the B/MAcc program is an accelerated bachelors and masters program for Accounting. I will be graduating in May of this year (so ready!) and then I will take and hopefully pass my CPA exams this upcoming summer (no, I cannot do your taxes). Part of the reason I chose this class is because I heard you could work ahead, which is important to me so I will have more time to study for the CPA exam as the semester comes to a close. My favorite class this past semester was probably Advanced Auditing with Dr. C, he combined his experience in the workforce with his current position in academia to create a very informative and fun class. However, Dr. Price in Accounting Theory & Research made a strong push for my favorite class on the last day when he brought fresh homemade bread along with homemade jam, meats, and cheeses.

Outside of school I enjoy playing basketball at the Huff (don't ever call it Sarkey's, please), cheering on the Sooners, just hanging out with my friends, and many, many other things. I am also involved with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and serve as their Treasurer currently. When not doing these things you might find me working or playing golf at The Jimmie (OU Golf Club). Now that I think about it - I have a ton of hobbies that also include: hunting (deer mostly), cooking, eating, traveling, watching TV (does that count?), and playing any type of game in which I believe I have a chance to win.

This summer I solo traveled Europe for 45 days and had a great time. If you ever have the opportunity to do something like that, I highly recommend it. You can see my post about one of my favorite places on this trip here: Lake Bled. Traveling the globe is something I definitely hope to be able to do throughout all the future stages of my life. In the future, I hope to be able to make a trip down under to Australia and New Zealand.

As for the future, I am lucky enough to have accepted a job offer from Deloitte & Touche to be an auditor at their Oklahoma City practice. I will start there sometime in September and begin life as a public accountant. I am both excited and nervous for this transition, as I have really enjoyed my time at the University of Oklahoma, but I also realize it is time for me to move on to this next period of my life.

  1. Oh, that MAcc program is a really excellent thing about OU, Ryan: I am glad you are able to take advantage of that, and how great to have your career path starting out with such a nicely planned transition from college to CPA to your own desk at Deloitte and Touche. Congratulations on that! And about basketball at the Huff, I learned about a basketball ghost story from a student project just last semester; do you know about the ghost players? This student made the legend even more sinister, but you can see about the usual legend in his note: The Big Game. So, if you see any ghostly goings-on at the Huff, now you know. :-)
I wish we had the magic ability to just travel the globe on some kind of flying carpet (where's my jetpack??!)... but books are a kind of travel of the mind, and there are some beautiful books online with traditional stories from Australia and New Zealand; you'll see them if you look through the "Pacific" section at the Freebookapalooza: Freebookapalooza: PACIFIC. You can use this class I hope as a chance for some virtual travel before you hit the real road again!

  2. Hi Ryan!

Congrats on that accelerated degree program! How nice that you'll get two degrees in just 5 years! I'm sure it was difficult work. Best of luck on your CPA exam. I just finished up studying, taking, and crushing my LSAT. Unfortunately, after graduation in May (I am very ready as well) I have 3 more years of school ahead of me. Hoping law school isn't as hard as everyone says... though I think I have some difficult times ahead. It will all be worth it though!

You seem to have a very active lifestyle. That is super awesome. My hobbies involve doing anything outside, so looking to move to a place where the weather allows me to be outside as much as possible!

Best of luck in your last semester and in September when you start your first "real" job!

  3. Hey Ryan!
That is so exciting that you are finally going to graduate this semester! I bet you are ready. I have until next fall until I graduate unfortunately. Traveling to Europe so like so much fun! My dream is to go to Italy. Accounting sounds very difficult but I am glad that you find it enjoyable! I attempted a accounting class once and I didn’t even make it past day two because I am horrible at math. Anyway, I hope you have a great last semester!

  4. Hey Ryan!

That is awesome! I bet you're so ready to graduate after doing an accelerated program. I would probably lose my mind from all the work constantly.

It's also cool that you traveled to Europe. I didn't go solo, but I traveled with a group of people and it was the best experience of my life. I wish we could have gone to more than three countries, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything, and I'm sure you would say the same.

Good luck in your future endeavors!

  5. Hi Ryan!

It's really cool to hear that you're in the B/MAcc program! My current roommate is part of the program too and they're very excited to graduate with (basically) all they need to dive into the workforce. (Sidenote: They also get annoyed when I jokingly ask them to do my taxes.) I also love travelling, cooking, and especially eating, and I hope you get plenty of time for all three when you dive into that job!

    Have a great semester!

  6. Hey there Ryan! Thanks for sharing what B/MAcc meant. I never understood what all the abbreviations in the business school meant so I found that helpful. I also love playing basketball. Unfortunately I haven't gotten to play much at the Huff but maybe I'll see you up there in the near future! Europe sounds like an experience and I thought your favorite place was a nice change of pace from more of the typical places that one would expect to see, so thanks for sharing! Best of luck on the CPA exam and best of luck moving forward into career life!

  7. Hey Ryan!

Congrats on being so close to graduation! I also graduate in May, so I understand the feeling of being ready to be done with school. Also, congrats on already having a job lined up after graduation, that's awesome! I hope to have your same kind of luck in the coming months.

Good luck on your CPA test, and I hope you have a great final semester!

  8. Hi Ryan!

You sound like you have a solid plan in place for your education and the beginning of your career. Congrats on the job offer! I think my freshman year was the first year of the Huff's renaming, so I was never sure what to call it (you'll be glad to know I still say the "Huff" most of the time.) My roommate was a high school golfer, and he was so excited the first time he got to play at Jimmie Austin. Your adventures in Europe sound awesome, too. Good luck with your career after graduation!

  9. Hi Ryan,
We are in the same boat, I graduate in may too. I am also facing the job world and it kinda scares me with the offers coming in and realizing I have to grow up. I am also super excited to be done with school because I am in my 6th year without a degree, I like to be indecisive about my decisions. Congrats!

  10. Hi Ryan!

It's nice to meet you! I'm also a senior here at OU, albeit in mechanical engineering instead. Like you, I'm so ready to finally leave college and start the next chapter of my life! Also, I also have a job offer so I can prepare for my career! It's also really cool that you got to travel abroad and learn more about other cultures! Eventually, I think I'd like to do the same!

Anyways, good luck this semester and congratulations on your job offer!

  11. Hey, Ryan!
It is great to meet you!
I am a junior studying English Ed here at OU, so I cannot understand your accelerated accounting/business program pains, but I understand desperately wanting to get out of school, haha.It is super cool that you have a job offer already! That is genuinely super cool, it is interesting that as students, we all get hyped for our peers who get jobs, even if we do not know each other. This summer I am studying abroad in Arezzo, so that is super cool that you got to solo-travel!
Anyways, it is nice to read your introduction!
    Best wishes,
    Mikayla

  12. Hey Ryan!

Congrats on accepting the job offer! As a fellow graduating senior I know how big of a load that is for this last semester as you can wind down and enjoy finishing up here at OU. Also it's really cool to see how you have utilized all of the great opportunities through the B/MAcc program as I have heard they are a big deal at our school.

  13. Hey Ryan.

I was also at that football game in Waco. What a game! It's awesome that you're getting your masters as well. I will also be graduating in May and I am super excited to be finishing up school. I am planning on taking a trip to Europe this summer for a couple weeks with my friends after we graduate so I'll have to look into your blog about your travels. Best of luck the rest of this semester!

  14. Hi Ryan!

Congrats on your job offer and finishing up your B/Macc! I plan on applying for the accelerated masters program for chemical engineering later this spring, so I have quite a bit more time left. Reading about Europe and homemade bread makes me miss Germany. It's great you had the opportunity to travel solo! I can't wait to start planning stuff like that. Best of luck this semester!

  15. Hi Ryan! Congratulations on graduating! I had never heard of the B/MAcc program before now, so additional congratulations to that! I’m also graduating in May and very excited to get out. Solo traveling sounds so amazing! It sounds like you had a great time. I’d love to try that myself someday. Good luck with your CPA exam and I hope that the rest of your semester goes well!

  16. Hi Ryan! Congrats on your job offer and finishing your degree! I'm in my last semester of the BA/MA program at the College of International and Area Studies, so I'll be graduating in May with my master's, too. I chose this class in part because of the ability to work ahead and set my own schedule, too; I'm writing a thesis this semester, and the more flexibility I have with the rest of my schedule, the better. I'm so jealous that you got to go to Europe, that must have been amazing traveling solo like that! Good luck with your exam, and hope the rest of the semester goes well!

  17. Hi Ryan! You major sounds really intense. At the end of the B/MAcc program, do you walk away with both a Master's and a Bachelor's degree? If so that's pretty dope. Math is not my forte. There was a time I was competent (high school junior year Algebra II I'm looking at you) but not so much anymore. In fact I don't trust myself to do much math without a calculator. What made you want to go into accounting? Good luck with everything!

  18. Hello Ryan,

I would like to start off by saying congratulations on finishing your degree and getting a job offer. This is my first time hearing about B/MAcc degree program. It is very neat that you were able to go to Europe and travel. I have been wanting to go travel in Europe for the past couple of years.
